Seven years ago today, filled with passion and hope , us Scots set out to vote for our Independence. We had had all sorts of dirty tricks played against us, we had the famous “Vow” that we would become complete equals in the UK, we had been told we were “too poor, too wee and too stupid” but still we thought we would win.
That night was the longest and saddest of my life , and , when the following day dawned and our leader, the redoubtable Alex Salmond resigned as First Minister and effectively handed the baton to his wee Ayrshire deputy, Nicola Sturgeon, I felt that he showed the world the type of man he is, and continues to be. It was desperately sad to see him leave, he had done so much for Scotland and to advance the cause for Independence but it was time for Nicola to step up to the plate and become our First minister.
She held a rally in the Hydro where 12,000 people attended. The gig was amazing and free. When she stood up to the microphone with her peerie heel Tartan shoes, the applause raised the roof.
It was the beginning of a new era which would take us to Independence.
What has happened in that time?
Well, she gave new Scots their first beds, in the form of the baby box. That was good. She made sanitary protection free to women.
Anything else? Apart from problems in Education, mounting drug related deaths, more and more homeless folk, hungry children?
But what of everything else she claimed as the SNP’s achievements? had already been Free University tuition
New railway lines.
Free prescriptions
Mitigation of the Bedroom Tax and the like.
Pretty much everything worthwhile on that list of achievements were with Alex Salmond’s hand on the tiller.
Nicola was worshipped in Scotland over her handling of the Covid pandemic and became the queen of our personality politics. People voted for her because they trusted her.
But look at what happened-
Nicola gave out the Covid info every day.
Realising that this was endearing herself to the populace she dispensed with her Health Minister , Jeanne Freeman , who took up a “stand silent and look serious “ role.
Jeanne is one of the most able politicos we had, equal to anyone and superior to so many yet sidelined into a supporting role in case she took the limelight from Nicola?
Nicola became so busy with her Covid infomercial that she didn’t have the time or energy to devote to other important things, like, well, the way forward to Independence.
Then there other even more alarming things
The missing ring-fenced donations for an Indepence campaign.
The untoward and slightly sinister machinations to stop Joanna Cherry , seen by many as the next First Minister, standing for election as an MSP, while Angus Robertson, Nicola’s favourite successor, was shoe -horned into position and won the seat.
There was the witch -finder General pursuance of Alex Salmond over supposed sexual offences , where not only was his innocence vindicated in the Scottish courts, but the accusers were given anonymity even though some were proved to have lied. The Scottish media covered the case based upon their preferred presumption that Salmond was guilty. The only journalist who covered the defence , Craig Murray, ended up in Saughton Prison without a trial for the newly created crime of jigsaw identification.
Today we face the Gender Recognition Act being brought into legislation, without debate or discussion with the membership, plus we women were told that our views were not valid. The Hate Crime Bill is running shoulder to shoulder with the GRA and is another abhorrence. A Scottish woman is facing court and huge legal costs because of her hate crime - she posted a tweet of some suffragette ribbons she had tied on to some fencing.
When parliament re-opened there were two peaceful protests at Holyrood, one to demand that Independence came first and foremost on the SNP agenda, and the second a ‘Women Won’t Wheesht” protest against the GRA and support for Marion Miller, the woman facing the “hate crime” accusation.
The SNP have responded by asking the , in my opinion, odious Priti Patel and our Imperial Masters at Westminster, to grant Holyrood protected status. To not allow any protests on the hallowed ground of Holyrood, which the architect designed for exactly the purpose of allowing Scots a place to gather peacefully and to make their voices heard.
Nicola is effectively trying to stop Scots protesting her Government’s rough-shod acts being passed into Scots law without discussion or accord , in the very place designed to allow our protests to be heard.
Well, Nicola you have fallen so far in my esteem that I now feel deceived and disheartened by you and your actions.
You Bonny Tartan Peerie Heels were filled with feet of Clay.
